Episode 1 — Once Upon a Hype Cycle

Once upon a hype cycle, Grant Ledger was going to empower creators. His startup, TipTop, promised to “revolutionize the creator economy” by helping influencers monetize “authentic engagement” through a proprietary AI-powered tipping algorithm.

The pitch worked. VC money poured in, LinkedIn posts went viral, and Grant was soon keynoting panels titled “The Future of Authenticity in a Digital Age.”

There were co-working spaces, hoodies, and a “company offsite” in Dubai (because apparently nothing screams innovation like burning investor money in 45-degree heat). Then came the crash. Engagement plummeted, the funding runway evaporated, and TipTop tipped over.

Grant swore off startups. Swore off buzzwords. Swore off Dubai. Until 2025.

A new headline flickers across his cracked MacBook screen: “AI + Blockchain startups raise record funding.” Grant pauses. The twinkle returns to his eyes… that dangerous blend of optimism and denial. “I haven’t even considered crypto… there’s so much money floating around with these fintech guys. I just need a slice of that pie.”

There’s only one destination for a man chasing his next fortune: Tokenville - the neon-lit heart of the crypto world, where every founder is a visionary, every bartender gives financial advice, and every regulation is optional. So Grant packs his last blazer, sells his gaming chair, and books a one way ticket on the Greyhound bus.

💭 Why I Made Tokenville

I’ve been in this industry since 2014, and I’ve seen some truly insane things. When the token standard exploded in 2017, it opened the floodgates to ICOs, IEOs, IDOs - and every other O you can imagine. What followed was chaos, brilliance, and everything in between.

Crypto really is in a league of its own. The characters, the cycles, the highs and lows.. it’s an ecosystem that constantly teeters between innovation and absurdity.

I created this story to have a laugh at all of it.. the good, the bad, and the downright stupid. Because if we didn’t laugh, we’d probably cry.

One day, I’d love to actually turn this into a real game. But for now, this interactive story is the easiest way for me to share that experience with you.

There’s so much more I’d love to include, so many moments, projects, and archetypes that didn’t make it into this first chapter because of the format. Maybe one day I’ll get the time and resources to tell the whole story.

Until then, take this as one founder’s love note to an industry I once thought would change the world… and still kind of hope will.
